UI/UX Designer

10 months (part-time)
Hero Workout 2.0 was my main project as a UI/UX designer at the company. I was in charge of the entire research and design process. My tasks included:
- Conducting user & market research
- Stakeholder management
- Developing user experience
- Designing user interfaces
- Creating prototypes
- Conducting user tests
- Development handoff
The concept and designs are done and delivered. The app is currently in development and is expected to be released in 2024.
There is currently a version of the Hero Workout app available in the app stores. However, that is not the application that I am referring to here. The new app has not been released yet, which is why I cannot give any detailed information on what I created exactly at this point in time. Its release is estimated for 2024. However, I will share a bit about how I worked on this project.
There are hundreds of fitness and workout apps available. How should people decide which one is the best, but more so the most effective one for them if they had never trained before? This is where usually a personal trainer would come in with their experience. But personal training is expensive and you have to plan it way ahead. You have to make an appointment and travel to the designated gym where your trainer is. All in all very time-consuming and inflexible.
SUCCES METRICS
After gaining an understanding about what this application should be about, I conducted market research on well established fitness apps. I analyzed them, tried some of them out myself, and noted down what their unique selling points as well as their weaknesses are, and how Hero Workout would fit in this competitive landscape. With the current version of the Hero Workout app still active in the app stores, I scanned through the reviews and analyzed the comments that often contained useful information for improvement. Along with that, I did a UX audit of the current application.
Next, I prepared questions for the interviews. The goal of the interviews was to find out what users particularly like and need in a modern fitness app, and what features or benefits would make a new fitness app attractive to them. Moreover, they served as means to verify or falsify hypothesis that were formulated as a result of the prior conducted online research.
How might we support individuals to move their bodies effectively without the need of a personal trainer?
With all the information gathered, I sorted it and synthesized it in an affinity map. Personas and journey maps that I created helped to define the key features that the very first version of the app must have. Next to the key features that make up the MVP of this app, I created a concept of additional features and information display.
The visual design part was divided into three sub-projects due to the complexity and size of the whole project. Each sub-project followed the same steps of creation as follows. Special graphical elements and animations were done by a graphic designer. User tests were conducted together with a colleague.
- Start with sketches & low fidelity wireframes to test layout
- Create high fidelity wireframes and test them in user flows
- Gather feedback & improve designs
- Develop high fidelity mockup screens & connect them to a clickable prototype
- Test clickable prototype in multiple rounds of user tests & take feedback
- Adapt designs according to user test feedback until no major errors occur
The end result is the final design of the new and improved Hero Workout 2.0 app. A whole new fitness app that provides personal training on another level. More on that coming soon.
